The highlight of the weekend was an inspiring session with the world-renowned Angolan supermodel, Maria Borges (@iammariaborges) — a name synonymous with resilience, beauty, and empowerment. Maria shared her incredible journey in the fashion world, from her humble beginnings to gracing the world’s most prestigious runways.
Discovered in 2010 through the Elite Model Look Contest, Maria Borges has since become a global icon. Her decade-long career includes walking for top fashion houses like Chanel, Dior, Versace, and Victoria’s Secret, and featuring on the covers of Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and Forbes. But beyond her glamorous portfolio lies a story of strength and authenticity.
In 2015, Maria made history when she became the first Black model to walk the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show wearing her natural afro hair — a bold and groundbreaking statement that inspired millions across the world. That defining moment was more than a fashion statement; it was a celebration of African identity and self-acceptance, encouraging women everywhere to embrace their natural beauty.
Today, Maria Borges stands as the first African model on ELLE USA’s cover and serves as Angola’s first Tourism Ambassador. Through her agency, The Star Management, she continues to empower and represent African talent on the global stage. Her mantra, “Step by step,” serves as a timeless reminder that greatness is achieved through perseverance, purpose, and grace.

As part of the GTCO Fashion Weekend experience, Maria invited aspiring models to join a FREE masterclass titled “The Model Mindset: From Getting Signed to Staying Relevant.” It was an unmissable opportunity to learn directly from a trailblazer who has redefined beauty standards and continues to champion African excellence worldwide.
Shaakara Africa was honored to witness this inspiring moment firsthand. The event was more than fashion — it was a movement celebrating creativity, authenticity, and unity in Africa’s growing fashion industry. From networking with top designers to connecting with visionary talents like Maria Borges, the GTCO Fashion Weekend 2025 reminded everyone why African fashion is the future.
